Sofia: Self-Guided Audio Walk Through Sacred and Civic Landmarks

This self-guided audio walk introduces Sofia through its great churches, public buildings, and historic squares. It is ideal for a first-time visitor who wants an accessible route through the city’s spiritual heart and political center, with plenty to look at along the way.

Your route begins at Patriarchal Cathedral St. Alexander Nevsky, where copper-green domes, pale stone, and broad open space create one of Sofia’s grandest views. From there, you continue to the early Christian St. Sofia Church, then the striking Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker with its bright tiles and golden onion domes. The walk carries you into the City Garden and past the Ivan Vazov National Theatre, before leading to the round red-brick Church of St. George and the nearby Presidential Palace.

You then return toward the Old National Assembly, continue to the Central Synagogue and the Catholic Cathedral of St. Joseph, and finish at Cathedral Saint Nedelia. Along the way, you will encounter Byzantine brickwork, Orthodox icons, Russian Revival detail, elegant civic facades, shady park paths, and some of the oldest surviving walls in Sofia. The most memorable moments include standing beneath Alexander Nevsky’s vast domes, seeing St. George tucked inside a modern courtyard, and feeling how many faiths and eras meet within a short walk.
