Good to know

  • What to Expect: In keeping with the nature of an expedition, your schedule is kept flexible to take advantage of the unexpected, adapting your course to the conditions and opportunities that arise. Your expedition experience can be tailored to the activity level you choose—whether it’s light, moderate or a little of both. Guests should be in good health, comfortable walking or standing for extended periods of time and over uneven surfaces, and able to get in and out of unstable expedition landing craft. Daily activities may include Zodiac cruises, easy hikes, walking tours and visits to cultural or historic sites, with options for more physical activities such as longer hikes or kayaking, depending on conditions. All departures are family friendly.
  • Expedition Team
  • A National Geographic Destination Expert or Photography Expert joins the expedition team on all departures.
  • National Geographic Explorers-In-Training: Kids and teens on Alaska, Baja California, Galápagos and the Journey to Antarctica Expedition, can join the National Geographic Explorers-In-Training program—a hands-on, interactive program developed with National Geographic Education. Led by certified field educators, the program fosters exploration skills and knowledge through fun activities such as making ice cream sundaes to learn about glaciers or recording wildlife observations in a field notebook. The program will help kids sharpen their observation abilities and document their adventures through photos, videos, maps and drawings. With a broad array of activities both on board the ship and in the field, the program encourages kids to dive into their interests, from marine biology to photography.
  • Explorers-In-Training (and their families) are invited to:
  • Learn from National Geographic-certified Field Educators: An integral part of the expedition team is a specially trained naturalist who will be aboard each voyage to optimize daily learning opportunities for kids, helping them to disconnect from tech and have direct contact with wildlife and wonders on land and at sea while forming bonds with their peers on the voyage, too.
  • Become a Storyteller: Through photos, videos, music, poetry, drawing and more, kids will be encouraged to think outside the box and use their creativity to tell stories about the unique things they’ll do and see throughout their adventure.
  • Develop Observation Skills: Daily activities in the field will prompt kids to watch out for a particular species or natural phenomenon, like an animal with wings or a glacier, then record their observations in their field notebook.
  • Enjoy Fun and Flexiblity
  • The National Geographic Explorers-In-Training bulletin board is the onboard headquarters for daily activities and challenges, where kids can choose what they’d like to participate in each day—from spotting bald eagles, humpback whales and other wildlife to paddleboarding or kayaking with newfound friends—developing lifelong memories with each activity. Schedules and activities both on and off the ship are designed with families in mind and include kid-friendly menus, movie night with pizza, a choice of hikes and more.
