Petra, an ancient city in Jordan, was founded by the Nabataean Arabs around the 6th century B.C. It grew from a settlement into a powerful commercial empire, controlling vital trade routes and accumulating immense wealth. Visitors enter via a horseback ride to the Siq, a narrow canyon leading to the city. The Siq dramatically reveals the Treasury (Al-Khazneh), Petra's most iconic monument, intricately carved into the sandstone cliffs. Its purpose is debated, but its design blends Hellenistic and Nabataean styles. Beyond the Treasury, Petra features the Street of Facades, rock-cut tombs with elaborate designs, and the majestic Royal Tombs. Pharaoh's Castle also adds to the city's mystique. Recognized as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World in 2007, Petra showcases the Nabataeans' advanced engineering, particularly their sophisticated water management system. Exploring Petra offers a profound glimpse into a thriving metropolis of unparalleled beauty and historical significance.
