Toruń Self Guided Walking Tour at Medieval Old Town
Torun is one of Europe's best-preserved medieval brick cities, and it began as two of them: a wealthy merchant Old Town and an independent New Town of brewers, tanners and masons, with a Teutonic fortress standing between them until the citizens tore it down in 1454. This self-guided walking tour traces that story across eight stops: a tower leaning 1.46 metres out of true, one of three surviving medieval gates, the merchant houses of Copernicus's family, a Gothic church built deliberately without a bell tower, the monumental Old Town Hall, the cathedral's seven-tonne Tuba Dei bell, the castle ruins and the New Town market square. It all runs from your own smartphone. No app to download and no physical guide to keep up with: professional audio narration and a written version at every stop, an interactive quiz to test what you have just heard, and a route map. Start whenever you like, pause for coffee, and pick the walk back up when you are ready.
Your experience
Stop 1
Audio narration from the street explains this 13th-century defensive tower, which leans 1.46 metres out of true, and its later life as a city prison.
Stop 2
Walk beneath one of Torun's three surviving medieval gates while the audio guide explains the city's Vistula-side defences and its portcullis and murder-hole system.
Stop 3
View the Gothic merchant granary houses on Kopernika Street from the street. The audio guide explains the astronomer's family, the merchant world he was born into and the debate over the exact birthplace. Museum entry is optional and not included.
Stop 4
Admire the exterior of this vast Franciscan Gothic church, built deliberately without a bell tower. The audio guide covers its mendicant design and its later Lutheran history.
Stop 5
Stand on the Old Market Square in front of Torun's monumental Gothic town hall. The audio guide explains how courts, offices and market stalls shared one building, and the 1703 fire that shortened its tower.
Stop 6
Look up at Torun's Gothic cathedral, home of the seven-tonne Tuba Dei bell and the Vistula-facing single-handed clock. The audio guide covers its role in Copernicus's baptism and city life.
Stop 7
See the ruins of the fortress that Torun's own citizens demolished in 1454, and the surviving Gdanisko tower. The audio guide explains the revolt and the Thirteen Years' War that followed.
Stop 8
Finish on the square of Torun's independent medieval New Town, laid out in 1264 for brewers, tanners and masons. The audio guide covers its guild houses and the church that replaced its town hall.
